If you have lived long enough, you have probably noticed that #suffering touches every one of us.  Why does #God allow it?  Can something good come out of suffering?  How does the Bible say we should handle these situations?  Where are we supposed to turn?  In this story, Jesus cautions us against a faith based on signs and miracles.  And yet, the man’s faith was rewarded with the healing of his son for the glory of God.  What was more significant, the healing of the son or the salvation of the man’s whole household?

Mosaics Of The Master – Christ The Source of Life – Delineated By A Saying

Last week, we heard how #Jesus showed He was the source of #life.  This week, we hear what He said to clarify that He is that source.  Jesus and His disciples were surrounded by agriculture and one of the biggest crops and even their national symbol had something in common.  All through the Old Testament the nation of Israel was referred to as a grape vine and not always in a positive way.  But Christ said that He is the true vine.  In what ways is Jesus Christ the vine that is true and perfect?  If Jesus is the vine, who are the branches?  Why is that important?  What happens to a branch apart from the vine?  Once the branch is attached to the vine, how does it produce fruit?  What kind of fruit would you reasonably expect from a grape vine?  What kind of fruit does the Bible say we can expect from our vine?

Did you know #Christ is not #Jesus’ last name?  It is his title and it means #Messiah and #Savior.  The first ‘I am’ that Jesus demonstrated was ‘I am the vine.’  He showed this with His first miracle at the wedding in Canaa.  Why would Mary ask her son to fix the problem that occurred?  Is there any importance that this happened at a wedding?  What is the significance of the elements of this miracle?  What happens to fruit that is not on the vine?  How did this miracle embody the Gospel principles of ’trust and obey?’  Why did they have big quantities of water sitting around?  What was said about the quality of the wine Jesus produced by this miracle?  Were Christ’s miracles tricks or did they have another purpose?

As I sit here summarizing the message for you, I am bothered by a bird fighting his own reflection on my glass window.  It reminds me that the World right now is in turmoil.  I am made in God’s image and so is my neighbor.  When I fight with my neighbor, I am therefore fighting my own reflection.  The Devil wants us to believe our enemy is our neighbor, but we are actually in a spiritual battle.  The Bible says that we struggle not against flesh and blood but against powers and principalities.

I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.  Who said that?  Was it #Mohammed, #Buddha,  #Krishna or #JesusChrist?  Jesus made that bold claim in John 14:6 and as God’s son he is able to back it up.  He is also uniquely qualified to work in our lives to bring us joy, real joy.  Paul closes his letter to the Christians at Philippi by wishing God’s grace upon them.  What is grace?  Can we earn it through good works or behavior?  What are the means of grace?  What are the types of grace?  Who is our source of God’s grace?

#Civility, #politeness, #courtesy – where have they gone?  If you watch the #news and these days it is hard to escape, you know that what gets reported is the #violent or #vulgar.  But if you are fortunate enough to gather with others and better yet other believers, hopefully you can get a dose of common decency.  If you are a Christ follower, or saint as the Bible calls us, it should be in your new nature to spread politeness wherever you go.  How did Paul share the joy of Jesus while imprisoned?

Have you ever heard of the #Doxology?  Praise #God from whom all #blessings flow!  Last time, we learned that God provides all His children’s needs.  This week we hear what our proper response should be.  It even ties back to Paul’s theme in Philippians about the Joy of Jesus. Joy in our lives comes from knowing our purpose.  Why are we here if not to glorify God?  Have you ever tried counting your blessings when you are feeling down?  It helps and you should take it further and thank the one who gave you those blessings.  How do we glorify God?  Does all the glory belong to God?  Why is it important to practice giving glory to God now?

#Want and #need, do you know the difference?  If you put the wrong emphasis on verses like this you wind up with what is called a #prosperityGospel.  Like we talked about last week, the motive matters.  We don’t give to receive, we give to honor God and as a result we receive all our needs.  Have you ever prayed to God for a thing you thought you needed only to realize later that it was really a want?  Are all of our needs good things?  Do we sometimes need correction?  What does it mean when the Bible says ‘according to His riches in glory?’  Well, I haven’t met or heard of a rich man yet who can afford to create a planet full of biodiversity much less a universe.  Oh and don’t forget the qualifier at the end that Paul loves to use – in Christ.

#Multitasking, are Christians told to be #spiritual or #practical?  Actually, it is both.  Does God use temporary things to accomplish eternal things?  Is it only money that Christians are asked to give?  Are only the poor truly spiritual?  What made the church at Philippi such a joyous one?  If Paul was joyful in poverty or abundance, why was he grateful for the Philippians’ gift and what it meant for them?  Does the amount of or the motives behind the gift matter more to God?
