This week may be a little less #blackandwhite than previous messages. Brother Tommy jumps right in with a discussion of #suicide and different types of it. Interestingly, when it comes to end of life decisions, it might interest you to know that Brother Tommy put into practice what he said here. Are there any ethical considerations involved in the transplanting of organs? When he gets around to talking about funerals, you should know Brother Tommy wanted to be laid to rest in a plain pine box in the backyard. Spoiler: he didn’t quite get his way. But enough about death, next we move on to status and how and whether it should be sought. And what does the Bible say about marriage and divorce? Is there an ethical consideration to how we shape our lifestyle?

What is an #honorable or #honest life? Listen to the three examples Brother Tommy gives about #fiscal responsibility, #immigration, and #economics. How does dishonesty start? What does the Bible say about honesty? How does an honorable life go beyond the honest life? What does the Bible say about slander, deceit, and even not speaking when we should? So, we can disobey God whether we are speaking or not. How can we lead a life of integrity? Why is it so important to practice at home as well as at work? The last half of this message must have been written by his wife, my mother, Barbara. It is about teaching all of this to your children.

How are our #ethics shaped by the situation in which we find ourselves? Should each situation have an effect on our ethics? What are the purposes of situational ethics? What are the dangers? What is the ‘Pure Principle of Love?’ Did Jesus ever set aside the law in favor of a person? Did Christ come to destroy the law or fulfill it? What is wrong with a theory based on the exception rather than the rule? What happens when there are no absolutes? I would like to remind you that this message was delivered in 1980 and it is more true today than when it was first delivered.

Ethics From the New Testament

Last week, we learned that #ethics are the standard by which we judge behavior. What can we learn about ethics by looking at the New Testament of the Bible? How did Jesus Christ approach the subject of ethics? How do we as a society approach this subject? Did Jesus strike down all of the laws from the Old Testament or did He build on those laws? What did Paul say about the law and how did it compare to what Jesus said? What about the other writers of epistles in the New Testament? What was common among all the lessons Christ gave on ethics? To whom are we responsible? Speaking of ethics, why doesn’t the New Testament condemn slavery more strongly?

Next week we will look at what the Bible says about ethics and whether they are affected by situations.

What does our relationship with God and our fellow man have to do with ethics? What are the three types of law given in Exodus? Was God trying to keep us from enjoying life with these laws? What other books in the Old Testament contain ethical lessons? What can we learn about our responsibilities from the Old Testament?

Healing Experienced

Is Brother Tommy advocating this as a substitute for medicinal intervention? What does blood flow have to do with health? How can the flow be stimulated? What does the Bible say about keeping our bodies strong? What does it say about medicinal intervention? And what can we glean from the examples of suffering saints? How important is our health? Is it supposed to be our ultimate pursuit?

Healing Expressed

Well, this message couldn’t come at a better time. Practically my whole family came down with a #stomachbug this week. Let’s listen to what Brother Tommy has to say about Biblical healing. What can we find in the Bible about faith healing? What do the miracles in the Old Testament have in common? How about those in the New Testament? What does that tell us about faith healing today? What is the atonement of Jesus and what does it have to do with healing? Is sickness the result of sin? Does sickness ever serve a purpose? Is it God’s will that we should all be cured of every disease? How then should we pray for healing of ourselves and others? But wait, you say, what about the gifts of the Spirit like healing, miracles, tongues, and interpretation? Or what about the passage in James that starts out,’ if there is any sick among you…’ There are some really interesting opinions in this week’s message. Definitely food for thought and prayer.

For the next three weeks, Brother Tommy will be speaking abut #healing. Why do Christ followers need healing, why do they even get sick? Should we pray for healing? What does it mean when that healing doesn’t come? Is sickness a result of sin? What did Job and Paul both recognize about sickness? What does the Bible say about the use of medicine? What does it say about rest? Who is the Great Physician? Did Jesus require a certain level of Faith before he healed people? Where does healing come from? Can the Devil heal?
